The Noble Eightfold Path

 Buddha's Teachings

1. Right View (Sammā-ditthi)Wisdom

  • Understand the Four Noble Truths.

  • Recognize the nature of suffering, its cause, its end, and the path to end it.

2. Right Intention (Sammā-sankappa)Wisdom

  • Commit to ethical and mental self-improvement.

  • Cultivate intentions of:

    • Renunciation (letting go of attachment),

    • Goodwill (non-ill will),

    • Harmlessness (non-violence).


3. Right Speech (Sammā-vācā)Ethical Conduct

  • Speak truthfully, kindly, and helpfully.

  • Avoid lying, gossip, harsh words, and divisive speech.

4. Right Action (Sammā-kammanta)Ethical Conduct

  • Act morally and peacefully.

  • Avoid killing, stealing, and sexual misconduct.

5. Right Livelihood (Sammā-ājīva)Ethical Conduct

  • Earn a living ethically.

  • Avoid professions that cause harm (e.g., arms dealing, slaughtering, fraud).


6. Right Effort (Sammā-vāyāma)Mental Discipline

  • Make a persistent effort to:

    • Prevent unwholesome states,

    • Abandon existing ones,

    • Develop wholesome states,

    • Maintain those already developed.

7. Right Mindfulness (Sammā-sati)Mental Discipline

  • Be aware of your body, feelings, thoughts, and mental patterns.

  • Practice mindful observation without attachment or aversion.

8. Right Concentration (Sammā-samādhi)Mental Discipline

  • Practice deep meditation (like the four jhānas) to develop a focused, peaceful mind.
